Classification of pumps ?

Pumps are machine used to move liquids and add energy to them. An operating pump change the mechanical energy available from the motor into potential , kinetic, and thermal energy imported to liquid flow.

Classification of pumps: Pumps are classified on the basis of the principle by which energy is added to fluid and their design features

1. Positive displacement pumps :These pumps operates on the forced ejection of some volume of fluid from a closed  chamber reciprocating pumps ( pistons pumps, pinger pumps ) rotary pumps( gear pumps, screw pumps, etc)  and semi rotary pumps belong to the category of positive positive displacement pumps.

2. Dynamic Pumps :These pumps are also sometimes called impeller pumps . In these pumps the major component is revolving wheel or impeller to which curved vanes are fitted . The principle on which these pumps work is the force interaction between a vane and a fluid flowing around it. Depending upon the shape of an impeller and the character of flow these pumps are further divided into centrifugal , axial flow and peripheral pumps .

3. Jet- Type Pumps : These pumps use the kinetic energy of a working fluid supply to pump . The example of these pumps are injectors , ejectors, water - jet pumps etc.
